Rajsamand Lake, Udaipur

Rajsamand Lake 61 kms. long and 3 kms. wide is one of the biggest artificial Lake in India. When Rajsingh was a prince, going to marry the princess of Jaisalmer, his marriage party had to stay three days due to flooded river Gomati. Only on that moment he decided to construct a Dam. The day came and the foundation stone was laid down on 1/jan/1662. The dam took about eight years and five months with total cost of Rs.1,05,07608.00

On the bank of the Dam three mandaps were constructed out of white marble, each mandap has three chokies. Even the steps to dam were constructed in such a fashion that you see from any angle you will find 9 steps together. The celiengs, pillars, brackets have magnificent work in white marble depicting the life, warfare, religion, system of measurement, tradional ornaments, costumes, dance poses, musical instruments.

The first mandap has very interesting scenes where newely wed girl departing for the husbands house. The villagers are seen in sad postures. Some where it is shown that the husband is dragging the wife, the camel of the camel cart is seen on a sad posture. This depicts the life of medieval India while other chatri a samant is seated on a chair and nautch girl is dancing with transparent costumes. That depicts the moughal influence over rajput jagirdars. The second mandap has a scene of animal fighting. The Elephent with Elephent, Ram with Ram, Elephent with Horse. The figures are Hindu but this kind of programs was organized by Muslims. At some places we find the battle scenes of mewar where we find the size of swords, small lances and spears.

Now the best part of the dam is Rajprasasti, the biggest ever written history on marble in the world is available here. This epigraphs where written under the supervision of Ranchod Bhatt Talang who was a very famous priest and educationist of his time in India. The Prasasti is written on 25 big marble plaques divided into 24 cantos. The epigraphs has given lot of historical, commercial, civil, education system, weighing system etc. to carve out the history and to bring the different beeds of historical facts together in the form of One Garland. The people interested in scenic beauty historical events may visit this place which is only 10 kms. form Kankroli.
