Chittor silently relates many grim and glorious deeds of heroic self sacrifice. Situated 115 kms from Udaipur on the bank of the holy Gambhiri River, Chittor is one of the most famous forts of Mewar. A place where the brave Rajputs and Rajputanis sacrificed everything, even their lives, for the sake of their motherland. It is that sacred spot, where many brave and pious women jumped into the burning fire of jauhar with their children to protect their honour and follow their husbands into heaven. Every brick and stone on this hill speaks about their valour, patriotism and sacrifice. Every temple and tower projects the ancient culture of Mewar.This fort was the citadel of many great Rajput warriors such as Rana Kumbha, Maharana Pratap, Jaimal, Patta, Bappa Rawal, Hamir, Rana Sanga and Rani Padmini, Karunavati, Panna Dhai, Tarabai and Mira bai. Situated at a height of 500 feet the fort is surrounded by 13 km of battlements. The narrow hill has an extension from the north to the south of almost 5 km. There is a famous saying about this fort.
