Distance from Udaipur: 40 Kms
About 40 kms from
Udaipur, is
Haldighati, the site of the famous
battle of 1576 fought between M
aharana Pratap and Emperor Akbar. This place is called
Haldighati or
Yello Vale, because of the color of its soil, which resembles turmeric (Haldi). Akbar who was determined to crush and subjugate the sole Rajput state sent a formidable army to finally conquer Mewar. The Maharana continued to defy Akbar and confronted the Mughal armies at Haldighati. The battle ended in a stalemate and Maharana Pratap and his followers withdrew to the craggy hills of Mewar. Pratap lost some of his loyal cavaliers in the battle like Jhala Man, Hakim Khan Suri, Raja Ram-Shah, Bhim Singh Dodia, Ramadas Rathore etc. Not only so, he even lost his famous faithful horse,
Chetak.
